What Is Gero Like Through the Year? Festivals, Fireworks and Waterfalls
This guide is for visitors deciding when to go to Gero and what the year there looks like. It uses the English pages of Visit Gifu and the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Event dates change from year to year, so confirm them with the organisers.
The short answer
Gero's biggest event is the summer hot spring festival in early August, and fireworks run on Saturday nights from January to March. Autumn brings red maples at the hillside temple and colour in the waterfall district of Hida-Osaka.
Winter: Saturday fireworks
JNTO says the firework shows run weekly from January to March, launched from the bridge over the Hida River at 8:30 p.m. every Saturday, and that the best vantage point is on the east side of the river. The themes follow the calendar: New Year and Coming of Age Day in January, the bean-throwing Setsubun festival and Valentine's Day in February, and Hinamatsuri, or Girls' Day, in March. JNTO adds that the thatched-roof houses of Gassho Village can be explored under snow. Check the schedule if you plan around a particular Saturday.
Spring and summer: Hida-Osaka falls
Visit Gifu's heritage page says the hiking season in Hida-Osaka runs from spring through fall. Its Mitsudaki course, a three-layered waterfall five minutes from the parking area, can be walked without a guide, and the Karatani course is described as suitable for beginners without a guide. Harder courses need a guide. A separate Visit Gifu page says the area has over 216 waterfalls taller than 5 meters and 14 hiking trails, that many courses cross national forest land and need a mountain entry permit, and that tours are available in English, Portuguese and Japanese. Shower climbing, a canyoning programme, is offered only in summer.
Early August: the hot spring festival
Visit Gifu describes the Gero Hot Spring Festival as a four-day event and the largest in Gero. The 2024 notice gave August 1 to 4. It lists a Dragon Fire Festival on the first day, in which five dragons and portable shrines move through town and gather on the Shirasagi-bashi Bridge, followed by mikoshi and samba parades, the Gero dance, a folk-dance parade, and musical fireworks. JNTO describes the Ryujin Fire Festival as running August 1 to 3, so the length differs between pages. JNTO also warns that accommodation is hard to come by in festival week, so book early.
Autumn: maples and waterfall colour
Visit Gifu says the red maples at Onsenji Temple are lit at night in autumn. In Hida-Osaka, Gandate Park, below a 72-meter-high, 120-meter-wide cliff formed by hardened lava from an eruption of Mt. Ontake 54,000 years ago, is famous for autumn colour, and the peak season in an average year is late October to early November.
Winter in Hida-Osaka
Gandate Park closes for the winter, but Visit Gifu says the local NPO offers winter trekking tours that visit frozen waterfalls, and its heritage page describes a Frozen Waterfall Tour offered only in winter. The waterfall page gives tour prices as starting from 300 yen and varying by course and group size, with a separate 300-yen trail maintenance fee where it applies.
Any time of year: the town itself
Outside the events, the town offers the same things in every season. JNTO says free foot baths dot the town, a morning market of local food and crafts suits early risers, and the Gero Onsen Museum tells the story of the town. Visit Gifu adds that the foot baths make a stroll a pleasure because you can soak in hot spring water almost anywhere. Gassho Village has no regular closing day on its page, which says it closes on irregular days, so check before you go in the low season.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- The festival dates for the current year, since the notice we read is from 2024.
- Whether the Saturday fireworks follow the same pattern this winter.
- Peak times for cherry blossoms in town, which these pages do not give.
- Snowfall and road conditions in the Hida-Osaka area.
